The Growing Giraffe is lawyer-turned-mommy Rukmini Banerji’s second baby — 11-month old Aarav being her first. When Rukmini became a mother, she realised that with modern lifestyles, family time ends up being spent making meals. Most times, baby food becomes the responsibility of the caretaker. In an Indian household specifically, a growing baby’s meals can be quite monotonous in their flavours and ingredients. Contrary to Indian baby feeding trends, research shows that it is essential to introduce a wider variety of nutrient-rich foods in the early stages, since the food habits formed in childhood tend to last for life.
Rukmini conducted her own research on baby food and discovered a whole range of fruits, grains, herbs and vegetables that Aarav could safely consume. As she started preparing simple, healthy and wholesome foods for Aarav, she thought, why not do the same for busy families with babies as old as or even older than Aarav?
